This could be two things: a village overrun with the enemy (you could say occupied by them), or the final dungeon. Either works.

But at this point, things have gone pretty bad. Lots and lots of people have been killed by the villain's army, and Percy has gone from cheerfully optimistic hero to shell-shocked war victim. Oh yeah, and at this point she's learned her Shard is slowly killing her, and she's got maybe a year to live.

Fun fact, I had originally planned a song called "I'm Going To Die?" about that very moment of discovery, but I couldn't get it sounding like I wanted and I scrapped it.
